Online Casino Players Use Caution
Surmising that online casino users are fairly Web savvy is a pretty safe
assumption because internet gambling players have a registered email address and
have the basic skills to search online and find appropriate gambling Web sites.
For that reason all online casinos players, and anyone using the internet for
that matter should be warned that a new malicious email threat is effecting
millions of internet users and is the largest scale botnet attack in years.
Basically the “Storm worm” is using an e-mail based attack to lure internet
users (that includes online casino players) to malicious sites that then
register the player’s computer as a part of the vast criminal botnet network.
Industry analyst and software security firms are reporting the highest levels of
these spam e-mails that has been seen in years. The spam e-mails usually contain
greeting card attachments, or contain links to breaking news. These emails are
NOT valid, and if a player follows through with the link and download they may
not even be aware the Storm Worm has affected their computer.
The email botnet attack is serious because of the sheer number of computers that
are already registered with the criminal botnet (at last count 1.7 million) and
the ongoing threat that those computers put countries and companies around the
world. If the botnet network is used for more than simply spamming, researchers
are fearing that the bots are being set up to launch denial-of-service attacks
in the near future. Says Joe Stewart, a researcher at SecureWorks, "It's really
gotten enormous. It's been building with exponential growth. It's one of the
largest botnets I've ever heard of."
This warning is not for merely the online casino players who may be affected by
the spam e-mails but the warning goes out to any internet user who uses email to
communicate and may potentially open one of the Storm Worm emails.
