France Drops Nylander Case
Media attention and public outcry in the European online casino gambling
industry did seem to alter the French government’s position concerning the
arrest of Unibet CEO Petter Nylander. That is, the French government remained
adamant about the arrest until pressure from the European Commission, Unibet,
and other companies in the online casinos gambling industry forced an admission
from the French government that Nylander was wrongfully arrested. But at the
same time, the French authorities placed the weight of the wrong-doing firmly on
the shoulders of the two French gambling monopolies.
Not long after the imminent transfer was announced, the French government
announced that it had ordered that the two government monopolies release the
case – and thus the arrest warrant – against Nylander. The spokesperson at the
European Commission commented, “Instructions were given to drop the
proceedings.”
The Commission reacted strongly against Nylander’s arrest because the French
government is supposed to be in the process of coming up with French regulations
on online casino gambling that more closely align with European Union policies
regarding free trade rights among the EU memebers.
But in what many in the online casinos industry can view as a cop-out, a
spokesperson for the French Budget Ministry commented, "It is not a matter
between the state and Unibet. Française des Jeux and PMU will be told to drop
their complaint.” And with this the French government can place the blame of
delays directly on the gambling monopolies. |
