The Lure of Online Casinos
Internet gambling was simply too tempting for an Australian man living in
Western Australia. The man obtained credit using other people’s information and
then used the credit at online casinos. He currently faces several fraud charges
and could face even more as the investigation continues. Online casino gambling
sites are debated around the world and are often criticized for both the high
levels of gambling addiction and because they are occasionally a source for
rampant criminal activity in countries with less-than-adequate gambling
regulations.
The division within the police department, specifically the Major Fraud Squad,
tracked the fraudulent activity back to the fraudster and subsequently
confiscated documents and computers from the man’s house. The fraudster culled
the information from customers of the Perth Building Society, and subsequently,
the building society began receiving an increasingly large number of disputed
transaction complaints from the customers. The fraudster’s confiscated computers
indicate that hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen credit was used a
several overseas online casinos.
The police department reports that the man currently faces fraud charges
totaling roughly $155,000, but that as the investigations into online casino
accounts continues, and more customers report fraudulent transactions, the
number could soar as high as $450,000. Online casinos gambling addiction is a
serious illness that is increasingly affecting more and more internet gamblers
all over the globe. As the e-gaming industry grows online gaming operators are
increasingly taking more precautions and finding safeguards that protect players
from both fraud and gambling addiction.
