Political Position on Online Casinos: Romney

Although the war in Iraq is tops on many voters list as reasons to vote for a particular presidential candidate seeking nomination in the primaries, other voters have another issue on the list: online casinos gambling. And though other political positions may seem more important than the growing debate over the U.S. online gambling ban, the UIGEA has in fact become an international issue and could cause long term problems and money losses for the U.S. With the international gambling industry seeking compensation from the U.S. and filing charges with the World Trade Organisation, the U.S. internet gambling policy is more important than ever before. With that in mind many voters going to the poles are looking for a presidential nominee who will support regulating the online casinos industry and bringing the U.S. into harmony with WTO trade agreements. There are three Republican candidates, McCain, Huckabee, and Romney, are still in the race for nomination and each candidate has their own unique position on the internet gambling industry.

Voters have reason to be very uncertain of Mitt Romney’s position regarding online casinos because he seems to have switched views on the issue more than once during the primary elections thus far – but that’s not surprising. The primaries are fiercely competitive and candidates are often altering their views to conform to what voters are want – so a candidates position can be entirely effected by the voting climate at the time. In this year’s primaries Romney is actually known for altering his views on major issues like online casinos gambling. John Pappas of the Players Poker Alliance commented that Romney has contorted his issue positions wildly in a bid to gain support from social conservatives.”

And to that end, Romney has even taken on a values committee – but that’s not strange either. Pappas notes, “The idea that a candidate has a values committee isn’t unusual, either. There’s a certain segment of the population that is evangelical. Many Republicans are going to cater to that to gain the party’s nomination. It’s difficult to nail down a candidate’s position until we figure out who our final two candidates are. Right now, the nominating process is about pandering to special interests.” That is why it’s really up in the air right now where Romney stands on online casinos gambling, his political stance is changing so often, but once the nominees are announced the PPA and others will have a better chance at finding out the truth behind the candidates views. This is certainly the case with Romney.

As an update, Romney has dropped out of the bid for the Republican nomination.
